Whether it’s a cosy murder mystery, a thrilling space opera, or even a high school textbook, reading should be a comfortable experience. It needs to feel like curling up beside a fire with a hot chocolate or a warm, mulled wine.
The words you read should be invisible. Their purpose is to create images that go beyond language, and the last thing you need is for the words to get in the way. Anything from a misplaced comma to a tedious second act can take you out of the story. The fire has gone out and your hot chocolate is now cold.
An editor’s role is to take the obstacles out of your story. To look at it from all angles, to see what is missing or unnecessary, and to turn your years of hard work into a beautiful product worthy of any bookshelf.
