‘I have a great idea but don’t know where to start.’
‘I started writing but quit halfway through.’
‘I’m not good enough to write a book.’
‘I’m too old to start writing a book.’
‘I’m hopeless at spelling and grammar.’
‘I don’t know what I’d write about.’
Sound familiar?
Writing a book can be terrifying. What should you write about? How do you construct a compelling plot? How long should it be? It’s enough to make most people quit before they’ve even started. Of those who actually start, the majority give up after the first few chapters. Perhaps their opening was solid but didn’t go anywhere. Or their characters were fascinating but didn’t do anything.
If only they’d had a writing coach.
What does a writing coach do?
Rather than editing an already finished book, a writing coach guides you through the process of creating your story in the first place. Everything from developing a plot, inventing believable characters, and building the perfect setting. On top of all that, a coach can also help manage your time by putting together a writing schedule, and will keep you accountable by giving you clear and specific goals.
A coach can help you dig deep by asking the questions: Who is this book for? What is your book really about? Why are you writing this book?
Sometimes the best thing you’ll get out of your coach is the motivation to keep writing. Having even one person in your life encouraging you through the often painful process of writing a book can be all you need.
Why should I hire one?
If you have an idea for a book but don’t know what to do with it. If you’re halfway through—or a third, or a quarter!—and feel like giving up. If you have everything ready to go but life keeps getting in the way.
If, if, if…
My first book was almost 100,000 words long, and almost all of them had to be scrapped. I’d read countless how-to books and articles, but for whatever reason none of them sank in. A writing coach would have stopped me from spending hours on an outline that didn’t work, from making my first three chapters nothing but backstory, and from writing two-dimensional characters who barely changed from the beginning to the end.
Helping others avoid the mistakes I made is my number one motivation for offering this service.
